I decided to publish this project online, given the nature of the content. Each day I will take notes on what I observe visually, and add them to this blog. At the end of the project, this should ensure a thorough record is kept of visual observation. Here are today's notes:
- Strut location varies significantly. Options so far include the high hip, mid-thigh, and high calf.
- Working theory is that depending on the strut location, we should be able to divide different sculptures into certain categories.
- Support is somewhat consistent between the Copenhagen and Capitoline copies. The tree trunk is wider at the bottom, and narrows as it rises. The strut locations also match (mid-thigh)
- Support is also somewhat consistent between the Saint Petersburg and Vatican copies. The strut locations also match (high hip + high calf). In both of these, the legs are almost touching as well.
- The Munich support is so vastly different that it makes me wonder if it's a restoration. Another interesting feature of note is the difference in pattern on the supports. The Saint Petersburg and Vatican copies also seem to have similar placements of the knobbly bits, whereas the Capitoline and Copenhagen versions are remarkably smooth in comparison.
- Munich copy is also unique in the pedestal and mask; consider a different setting, since imagery could be appropriated into a different context. Perhaps theatrical setting?
